Both photography and cinema were met with debates throughout their histories regarding their supposedly inherent capacity of capturing reality through objective and mechanical means. From these debates aesthetical movements emerged, aiming to deconstruct these ideas and present, with their own peculiarities, techniques and approaches that would make explicit the expressive, sentimental and subjective characteristics of their works. Two of such movements, the Pictorialism of the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, and the German Expressionism of the 20th Century, became archetypes of an expressive and particular artistic approach, that shaped the histories of both photography and cinema respectively. Tulpas aimed to reinterpret these expressionist ideals, by studying the emergence of these movements and its techniques, by means of a contemporary photobook
