This essay analyses the covers of magazines targeted to a single gender, and people as the main image on these covers, based on Peirce’s semiotics and Freud’s psychoanalysis principles. In a first moment it will be discussed the motivations to reading a magazine and the role of a title on the imagination of the reader. Next, it will specifically discourse about the magazine´s cover physical and psychological attributes, respectively: layout, reading, logo and typography, colors, photography and the use of characters and. Considering these characters are mostly celebrities, it is necessary to specifically talk about them, besides the body language portrayed in all cases. Finally, the magazine covers will be divided in groups, and these groups will be analyzed with the intention of identifying patterns and unities of speech, also pointing out the exceptions. Through this analysis, the dominant speech of the print media and the reader’s interpretation, whether conscious or unconscious, will be treated, verifying thus, the role of magazine covers as generator or advocate of the modern era symbols, but that also brings perpetuated signs for centuries
