Caracterização das pesquisas sobre punição publicadas no Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (JEAB) - 1959 – 2013

The concept of punishment for behavior analysis is not a consensus. Two dominant formulations are divided into the literature on the topic: the definition of Azrin and Holz (1966), and Skinner (1953). The first defines punishment as a process in which the consequent stimulus presented immediately after the behavior reduces the likelihood of their occurrence, considered so symmetrically opposite the ground stabilization. On the other hand, the definition of Skinner is placed in term of operation: withdrawal of a positive reinforcer and presentation of a negative reinforcer. The objective of the present work is the characterization of the research on punishment in JEAB, which will help to elucidate investigative trends on the topic, bringing up theoretical and methodological issues raised by researchers and possibly contributing to conflict resolution. To achieve this goal there was a revision of the articles on the topic published between 1959 and JEAB, 2013, the NBCI: PMC database (Pub Med Central). There was a predominance of Azrin and Holz on authorship of articles, and consequently the institution Anna State Hospital, research site of these authors and their collaborators between the years 50 and 60. Given this, these were also the most cited in the discussion of the definition of the term. The vast majority of articles have not defined punishment. There was a decreasing distribution of articles published over time, a fact which coincided with decreased use of electric shock as aversive stimulation. Also noted an increase in use of human beings as subjects of the research studied in the last years of publication
