The object of study of this research paper is pregnancy in adolescence. The investigation focuses on the factors which lead adolescents, between 15 and 18 years of age and from the marginalized population, to become mothers even when they have access to information on how to prevent and avoid a possible pregnancy. The present study seeks to understand for what motives and under which social circumstances these young women choose motherhood, questioning whether this option is part of a life plan. It inquires about the significance of motherhood for these young mothers and the changes which occur in their daily lives as they begin to live this new reality. The research also considers the evaluation of these young women themselves, about the fact that they are adolescent parents, thereby including them as subjects in the investigation. The guiding idea of the research was to verify if pregnancy in adolescents of the marginalized population can be seen as a form of social recognition, in face of the lack of opportunity to be valued in the social context in which they live. The research showed that, for some young women, pregnancy represents the possibility to construct a life plan and the opportunity to feel valued by society, despite, at the same time, suffering both restrictions and social discrimination. In lower proportions, pregnancy in adolescents occurs in the middle and upper classes, thereby revealing the presence of other elements in this problematic situation, such as gender relations, social and familial difficulties to broach and speak about sex and protection, independent of social class or age.
