The present research was born from the observation of the particularities that involve the imprisonment of women in Brazil. Among them, loneliness and multiple burdens poured in the post-incarceration period can be highlighted. By verifying the growth in the number of people imprisoned in Brazil during the years 2000 to 2016, the relevance of studies on mass incarceration in the country was highlighted. It was noted that the rate of women in the prison system increased disproportionately. Therefore, it was considered necessary to think about the development of the Brazilian penal apparatus in said period and to demonstrate how women – with the young, racialized and poor being the most affected by this process – are impacted, whether socioeconomically, politically, or subjectively, by experiences related to the prison system. For a more complex consideration regarding the prison issue, the evaluation was made through the understanding that oppressions (of race, class, gender and other) are intertwined, being mutually dependent, and from a perspective that considers the Brazilian prison system, which has a logic of operation that was imported, successful, precisely because it is capable of fulfilling its purpose. Finally, the present research aimed to discuss the direct relationship between mass incarceration and work, focusing on the possible association, in the case of women, with domestic work (care work). Thus, there was an effort to point out the associations between prison logic and femininity. Authors such as Michel Foucault and Angela Davis, together with theses and articles produced in contemporary Brazil, such as the work of Dina Alves, were central to this analysis. The objective was to use past and present literatures, at international and national levels, so that the problem could be understood in a broader way.
