Resumo: Supported by literature, this study aims to characterize the role of shelter for children and adolescents in the Brazilian reality, identifying the views of children and adolescents in the present legal documents in Brazil, and define the role of educator, as part of the team while working into a shelter for children and adolescents. It is organized into three chapters dealing respectively with the concept of shelter in an overview of social history, considering the importance of its creation and its existence in today's society, having regard to the Statute of Children and Adolescents (ECA / 1990) and its provisions on the operation and maintenance of shelters, the social history of the Child, which retrieves the historical aspects of the process of social constitution of the concept of the child, addressing conceptions of childhood in every historical and political moment in Western society, from the Middle Ages to the present day, and the role of the teacher in his work in shelters, considering the relationship between care and education and the role of professional education in the context of the multidisciplinary team required for shelter, as an institution of guard, but above all, child's educational institution. It is recommended that further work on this research, the aim of the broader definition of the role of the teacher in this context

It is recommended that further work on this research, the aim of the broader definition of the role of the teacher in this contextApoiado em pesquisa bibliográfica, este estudo objetiva caracterizar o papel do abrigo para crianças e adolescentes na realidade brasileira; identificar as concepções de criança e adolescente presentes nos documentos legais, no Brasil; e definir o papel do educador, como componente da equipe multiprofissional que atua em abrigo para crianças e adolescentes. Está organizado em três capítulos que abordam, respectivamente, o conceito de abrigo, em um panorama geral de sua história social, considerando a importância de sua criação e de sua existência na sociedade atual, tendo em conta o Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente (ECA/1990) e suas determinações sobre o funcionamento e a manutenção dos abrigos; a história Social da Criança, que recupera aspectos históricos do processo de constituição social do conceito de criança, abordando as concepções de infância em cada momento histórico e político da sociedade ocidental, desde a Idade Média até os dias atuais; e o papel do pedagogo em sua atuação em abrigos, considerando a relação entre cuidar e educar e o papel do profissional de educação no contexto da equipe multiprofissional requerida pelo abrigo, como instituição de guarda, mas acima de tudo, instituição educadora da criança.
