O “nosso” em Nossa Senhora: a ressignificação de devoções marianas ibéricas a partir da transplantação do catolicismo lusitano ao Brasil

Though they clearly have a peculiar impact over the routine of those who identify themselves as catholic, Marian devotions are a part of the lives of every Brazilian, even if they constitute only a small aspect of it. Even as that presence manifests itself in the names of men and women, on the television, on the radio, throughout social media, in fashion and in design, it is necessary to consider that, before constituting a significant piece of national culture, these figures have been transplanted to the Americas through violent colonization. This is the complex beginning to the reconstruction of a complex story. Having this in mind, this dissertation had as its most general goal that of investigating the implementation of Marian Catholicism in Brazil, with an emphasis on the local processes of re-signification of Iberian Marian devotions. To achieve that, three case studies were built by compiling documental and bibliographic data about the devotions of Our Lady of Cabeza, Our Lady of Nazareth, and Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Aparecida. Then, given the possibility for comparison between specific aspects of these devotions, this research aimed to reach towards a more complex reading of the relations of power involved in their constructions, which seem to star agents that aren’t passive, and, above all, whose example seems to resist against most dialectical categorizations of our reality
