This paper analyzes the discussions about the laity and laity in the Church, their mission and in the Church until the understanding of what would be a theology of the laity proposed in the Second Vatican Council. From this perspective, theological notions of the laity were studied, the laity and laity as baptized Christians. Given the proper historical and theological contextualizations of the Conciliar event, the interpretation of the Fourth Chapter of the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium on its Triple Mission is developed. All this work shows the secular vocation of lay and lay Christians in the Church and in society. As "salt of the earth and light of the world" (Mt 5, 13-14)
