The comic books were born at the end of the 19th century and they are successful until today, but many people believe that they were born at the time of the carmen. They are magazines with a sequence of pictures with drawing and text together, the drawing being the main element. They are important communication means and they can be used for propaganda, political campaigns or in text books. Ziraldo and Maurício de Sousa are considered the greatest comic book artists in Brazil. However, today Ziraldo is devoted more to the production of text books and Maurício de Sousa set up his own agency, being the most successful author of comics. The comic books, unlikely were thought in the past, are a reinforcement and an aid for education. They help students develop their habit for reading, as well as it is one more resource for the teacher to work in class besides PCN's recommendation to use the genre in the classroom. The comics books, in spite of being written texts (the reader reads the text), have characteristics of spoken texts. They are replete of verbal and non-verbal language, that represent forms of communicaction of the characters and the narrator. The balloons, containing the character’s speeches; the subtitles, with the narrator's speech and the onomatopoeias are resources used to give the reader the impression of orality.
