The interest in synesthesia dates back to classical antiquity in which the association between the senses was already a debatable subject but from the eighteenth century on it became the object of interest and with prominence in the last century. The support developed throughout the history of synesthesia triggered a list of studies to delineate the various modalities of synesthesia to also indicate their characteristics and validate methods and concepts in research. As a result, some dichotomies about synesthesia were generated making it possible to think of it as a disorder. In the light of the new discoveries, we seek to outline a new understanding of the subject bringing contributions to education especially the musical one. The objective of this research is to overcome the problem of the generated dichotomies, providing theoretical reference on synesthesia considering it as something present in every individual as well as to share a report of successful experience in music education based on multisensory, proposing what we call a synesthetic approach. To this end, the research is structured in a bibliographic survey indicating the main authors who collaborated with the deepening of the synesthetic issues emphasizing the publications of the last thirty years and based on phenomenology.
