Resumo: Designed by Aristotle (4th century BC) as a kind of subtle raw material matter, ether would be the "fifth element" which, besides being at the origin of the four elements of nature, would have generated the immutable and perfect celestial bodies. As well known, several of the earlier theories on the constitution of matter already refer to something similar to ether. However, it is in Aristotelian cosmology that this imponderable and subtle matter receives its own contours, from this; it occupies a very special position in future studies and debates, throughout the centuries. Even experiencing many changes, the ether did not disappear, not even when new insights on matter and the cosmos become frequent, especially during the first modernity. Particularly centered in the 17th Century, this dissertation focuses on Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), because there are clear indications that this outstanding scholar has introduced many modifications to his ideas about the ether, according to the phase of his works. In order to better verify these modifications, a small sample of the Newtonian writings, which point in this direction, is analyzed here. The selection of these writings was supported by an extensive historiographical review, and covers, particularly, the beginning of Newton's career and the phase in which he developed Optics, when his more mature version of ether appears to emerge

In order to better verify these modifications, a small sample of the Newtonian writings, which point in this direction, is analyzed here. The selection of these writings was supported by an extensive historiographical review, and covers, particularly, the beginning of Newton's career and the phase in which he developed Optics, when his more mature version of ether appears to emergeConcebido por Aristóteles (IV sec. a.C.) como uma espécie de matéria-prima sutil, o éter seria o “quinto elemento” que, além de estar na origem dos quatro elementos da natureza, teria gerado os imutáveis e perfeitos corpos celestes. Como se sabe, várias das teorias anteriores sobre a constituição da matéria já se referem a algo semelhante ao éter. No entanto, é na cosmologia aristotélica que essa matéria imponderável e sutil recebe contornos próprios, passando a ocupar uma posição muito especial em futuros estudos e debates, ao longo dos séculos. Mesmo sofrendo várias mudanças, o éter não despareceu, nem quando novas visões sobre a matéria e o cosmo tornaram-se frequentes, sobretudo durante a primeira modernidade. Particularmente centrada no século XVII, esta dissertação foca Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), pois existem claras indicações de que este destacado estudioso introduziu várias modificações em suas noções sobre o éter, conforme a fase de seus trabalhos. Para melhor verificar essas modificações, analisa-se aqui uma pequena amostra dos escritos newtonianos, que apontam em tal direção. A seleção desses escritos foi apoiada em uma extensa revisão historiográfica e abrange, em especial, o início da carreira de Newton e a fase em que elaborou a Óptica, quando parece surgir a sua versão mais madura sobre o éterCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESapplication/pdfhttp://tede2.pucsp.br/tede/retrieve/48001/Daniela%20Bueno%20de%20Camargo.pdf.jpgporPontifícia Universidade Católica de São PauloPrograma de Estudos Pós-Graduados em História da CiênciaPUC-SPBrasilFaculdade de Ciências Exatas e TecnologiaHistória da CiênciaÉterMatéria - ConstituiçãoNewton, Isaac – Sir [1642-1727] - Crítica e interpretaçãoHistory of ScienceEtherMatter – ConstitutionNewton, Isaac – Sir [1642-1727] - Criticism and interpretationCNPQ::CIENCIAS HUMANAS::HISTORIA::HISTORIA DAS CIENCIASO conceito de éter nos trabalhos de Isaac Newtoninfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da PUC_SPinstname:Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)instacron:PUC_SPTEXTDaniela Bueno de Camargo.pdf.txtDaniela Bueno de Camargo.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain163655https://repositorio.pucsp.br/xmlui/bitstream/handle/21828/4/Daniela%20Bueno%20de%20Camargo.pdf.txt934229733e493c2602b4e7d9e9d0a69fMD54LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
