Waltercio Caldas: The thing before the name is the title of this work that that proposes researching questions about materiality, the gestation of the artwork, its potential among other things raised by the carioca artist in his testimony in the documentary The work of art, which takes as a reference the artwork Untitled (2006). Issues such as the system of signification, de displacement of sense, constructions procedures, for example, the gap between design and object and the name given to the object were analyzed by theories of Charles Sanders Peirce in the interpretation of Maria Lucia Santaella and Umberto Eco. This monograph presents the transcript of Waltercio Caldas’s speech from the video and the importance of the artist’s testimony according Maria do Carmo Freitas Veneroso (UFMG 2006), for a better understanding of Waltercio Caldas’s artwork. It was also performed a clipping that relates the artwork Untitled (2006) and his contemporaries such as Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica. The artists in question here are in the context of conceptual art in accordance with Paul Wood and Cristina Freire, who seeks to relate the problems of representation and constituent aspects concerning the sign, object and interpretant of the conceptual issues that arise in this work.
