Resumo: The object of this research is the female body and the signs likely to be analyzed in their screen representations. These signs are visible and interpretable in the body silhouette, clothes, eroticized parts, attitudes, speeches, relationships and social practices. What role has the movies played - and still plays to bring the body, especially the female body, to the foreground of culture? Which are movies contributions to the changes in the conception of the female body by culture? These are questions approached by the research. My hypothesis is that the movies is a catalyst of changes in conceptions which are central to culture as is the case of body in contemporary culture. The main objective is to analyze the female body in the movies, and check the dialogue that the movies has with culture. Specific objectives are to analyze forms of representing the female body in the movies, to relate similarities and differences, considering the survey of key categories which are in tune with the collective imaginary in whose construction movies contribution is fundamental. The theoretical background follows three main paths: studies of body and communication; behavior studies; movies studies. To meet the objectives, the analyses are directed to movie main characters and to the context of happenings. 32 movies were selected for the analysis corpus. Selection criteria were: main female characters recognized for their beauty and popularity in the role they played; plots or contexts that present a crisis in sociocultural paradigms; innovative, polemic movies within the commercial circuit, and with good audience indicators with broad distribution in movie theaters and videos shops; possibility of studying sociocultural changes. The movies were made between 1930 and 2005. Methodology consists of bibliographical research; recognition of historical thought about the body; survey of stars and characters who became popular hits, analysis of main characters by using Santaella s semiotic proposals, Jameson s criticism, Castilho s fashion; grouping films selected in blocks, considering the pre-categories thought for the body; setting up an evaluation form to analyze main characters; selecting scenes for body categorization, DVD recording; conceptualization of female body categories in the movies. This work can highly contribute to new studies of the body as communication, due to the historical survey and the analysis and categorization of the body in the movies in the period indicated

A fundamentação teórica segue três vertentes: estudos do corpo e comunicação; estudos do comportamento; estudos do cinema.
