The purpose of this work is to study impeachment in Brazil, the recourse for the removal of a political authority. The landmark selected refers to the removal of the then president of the Republic, Fernando Collor de Mello, with our study also spanning the presidencies of Itamar Franco, Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, covering the period from 1993 to 2010. In order to achieve this purpose, we verified the documents filed in the House of Representatives concerning the aforementioned period (1993-2010), as well as investigated the role of the press, which - through the scandals it chronicled - integrated the struggles of this process that went beyond the boundaries of the political arena. The study underscores the origins of impeachment, first established in England, covers the adaptation of the recourse in the United States and concludes with its historical trajectory in our country. The primary focus of our study is to show how Brazil has adopted impeachment as a symbolic weapon, seeking to strip the President of his political capital and remove him from office while upholding the constitutional provisions and the neoliberal system of accumulation of capital and averting a coup
