Resumo: This monograph aims to analyze the importance of corporate sustainability. Industrial pollution started to impact the natural environment in the 19th century, with the Industrial Revolution, and has expanded considerably since then, causing multiple environmental disasters with an expressive global fallout. The corporations play an undeniable and fundamental role regarding this matter. Moreover, only the implementation of Environmental Management Systems by those organizations could open up prospects of a minimal sustainable development. Sustainable development is not aimed at hindering progress; instead, it seeks a balance between the environment and the economy. These factors lead to the conclusion that sustainable development is of utmost importance. Corporations that adopt sustainable practices contribute to the preservation of natural resources, to the development of a fairer society, and to a sound development of the economic activity. Additionally, this allows them to honor their social and environmental role, assuring dignity to the people and protecting the environment for future generations

A contaminação do meio ambiente natural pelas indústrias teve início com a Revolução Industrial no século XIX, e dessa época em diante o problema teve um crescimento exponencial, causando inúmeros desastres ambientais que tiveram enorme repercussão global. O importante papel desempenhado pelas corporações é inegável e imprescindível, e somente com o avanço de Sistemas de Gestão Ambiental por parte das empresas se terá uma perspectiva de um desenvolvimento minimamente sustentável. O desenvolvimento sustentável não visa impedir o progresso, mas equilibrar o meio ambiente e a economia. Conclusivamente, o desenvolvimento sustentável é de extrema importância. As empresas que adotam a sustentabilidade contribuem para a preservação dos recursos naturais, para o desenvolvimento de uma sociedade mais justa e para o bom desempenho da atividade econômica.
