This research is about the mental health practices in institutional care services for children and adolescents. More specifically, it questions the medicalization of childhood as a form of control in the lives of children and adolescents. The research took place in a care center in São Paulo that has medicalization resistance history of the patients. We attempted to understand through conversation circles and narrative interviews, the clashing process that occurred in the 2000s and how they have sustained a political commitment in the service. To achieve this we talked to professionals of the service and from the network in the past and now; and adolescents and young adults welcomed in the past and today. Under the contributions of Social Studies for Children, Institutional Analysis, Michel Foucault and Oral History, we attempted to discuss how the mental health demands produced in residential care services have been configured. The first chapter discusses legislation related to childhood and welfare policies that guided the institutional care services for children and adolescents. In the second chapter, we discussed the construction of psychiatry‘s place in contemporary society and how this context reflected in the practices and studies in the field of childhood and adolescence, mainly in residential care. It also contextualizes the field of public policies for childhood in institutional care and its protection measure in the city of São Paulo, specifically through state prosecutors‘ procedures. Finally, two narrative essays were developed: 1) on the methodological strategies of a team and how they have established a process of childhood medicalization resistance in the 2000s and 2) the resistance process of João, a institutionalized child from his first year of life and pathologized in all its manifestations and reactions. We believe that this work can contribute to methodological clues of a way of doing things that resists the adult-centered, medical-psychiatric and tutelary discourses that can easily disregard the multiple childhoods and their singular manifestations
