A presença da matemática na formação do professor do ensino primário no estado de São Paulo, no período de 1890 a 1930

Resumo: The goal of this work is analyzing how Mathematics was taken into account in the elementary school teacher s background in the State of São Paulo, during the period comprised between the years 1890 and 1930. A geographic-temporal space characterized by significant educational changes in the scholar culture will be presented. In the core of such changes, it is possible to realize the role that Mathematics has played, initially fulfilling the worker s background needs and then providing knowledge to the children s intellectual phase. Such changes are brought into light by studying: (a) how Legislation has impacted the Elementary Education during the Brazil Empire period and (b) how the republican cultural context has drawn new guidelines to Brazilian Education, particularly in the mathematical background of the so-called Public Instructional Educator in the State of São Paulo, during the First Republic. Research sources are based on the Official Education Legislation of the State of São Paulo and the Education Magazine that appears in 1902. These sources reveal the name of Mr. Parker whose letters have been recommended to educational purposes by the educational managers and distributed to all public elementary schools of the state of São Paulo which were in charge to adequate the republican idealism to the Education

Trata-se de um recorte geográfico-temporal marcado por importantes reformas educacionais que repercutiram e transformaram a cultura escolar da época. É no cerne dessas transformações que se percebe a presença da Matemática, num primeiro momento, associada às matérias pertinentes à formação do trabalhador e, num segundo, caminhando em direção ao respeito à fase intelectual da criança. Para denotar como essas transformações se processaram, fez-se necessário regredir na linha do tempo, procurando, assim, compreender por meio da Legislação como foi concebida a educação elementar no Brasil Império. A seguir, houve a precisão de reconhecer o contexto cultural de onde partiram as novas diretrizes para a educação brasileira, para então responder como a matemática se fez presente na formação do educador da instrução pública paulista no período da 1ª República. Como fontes de pesquisa foram utilizadas a Legislação Oficial do Ensino do Estado de São Paulo e a Revista do Ensino, periódico lançado em 1902 destinado ao professorado paulista. Nessa trajetória de reapropriação dos textos constantes nos dispositivos legais e os divulgados pela imprensa periódica surge o nome de Mr. Parker, autor de cartas que levam o seu nome.
