Os sentidos expressivos do sufixo -eiro: elementos de valoração na formação do léxico

This work was elaborated as a result of the Specialization Course in Portuguese Language at the Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) and its main subject is the study of the suffix -eiro in word formation used in Modern Brazilian Portuguese and respective construction possibilities of new contents related to contexts that depend on historical, cultural and motivational factors. The hypothesis that we take into account is in the fact that the suffix -eiro is linked to activities considered less noble and the intolerance towards repetitive acts, especially in Western cultures. We established as a general objective to reflect about the reasons and ways in which the morphological resources are taken to express pejoration in the use of the suffix -eiro, as well as to understand if the semantic aspect, as important as the syntactic aspect, can be related to the speaker intention by adding this suffix. In order to achieve this general objective, the following specific goals were defined: 1st) Investigate how the negativity of the suffix -eiro in adjectives and nouns resulting from regionalisms and slang is conveyed to the suffixes that form professions and to adjectives and nouns with the notion of qualifiers of continuous and repetitive acts. 2nd) Verify situations which the use of the suffix -eiro acquires negative charge in the formation of professions and analyze in which way the adjectives deriving from nationalities (gentilics) and nouns deriving from regionalisms acquired the same pejorative character. 3rd) Analyze how the subjective function (Basílio, 1987) is characterized by the speaker's need to express emotional burden from the derivational affix -eiro. To achieve our goals, this work makes an interface between lexicology and morphology, basing the studies on the contributions of Basílio (1987 and 2004), Cunha & Cintra (2017), Rocha (1998), Sandmann (1989a, 1989b and 1991), Viaro (2007, 2011 and 2012) and Finkbeiner, Meibauer & Wiese (2016). We intend to structure the development of the research and present practical examples and theoretical reflections on the subject. To exemplify it, we select as corpus 618 words ending in a suffix -eiro from the site Palavras Que Rimam© in August 2022. The obtained results show that the pejorative tone may be a consequence of a conscious action by the language user to obtain the desired expressiveness
