Resumo: | Considering the importance of games for the installation of health behaviors through behavioral and educational strategies, it was intended to identify the contingencies of reinforcement involved in the AlphaBeatCancer app, and to verify whether the same would be capable of evoking behaviors of adherence to the treatment of pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It was also sought to verify whether the use of this app by the participants would be accompanied by changes in their descriptions about cancer and its treatment, and identify their opinions about the app. Six girls and two boys, between 5 and 13 years of age, participated in the study. The adherence data were collected daily by the researcher via telephone or whatsapp with the patient’s mothers. Data from five participants during the baseline showed a relatively high and stable rate. After playing AlphaBeatCancer, the two children whose mothers provided data on adherence in the intervention phase maintained rates similar to those of the baseline. The six children responded, individually, before and after using the game, to a script in which the researcher asked questions about disease and treatment. The number of correct answers increased significantly after the use of the game, which was positively evaluated by the children. It was hypothetized that high adherence rates at baseline may have resulted from the performance of the Child Psycho-oncology service of the hospital. The increase in the number of information on cancer and its treatment was not accompanied by an increase in adherence of the few patients whose data were obtained. The limits of the study include the reduced sample size and the choice of the self-care behaviors evaluated |
