This research aims to analyze the novel São Bernardo (1934) by Graciliano Ramos, focusing on the figure of its narrator and the question of how reliable he is. Throughout the investigation, we review the concept of the novel and draw a panorama of this genre in Brazilian literature, from the observation of its historical course, in order to better understand the object of the research. The terms “social” and “regionalist novel”, according to critics, define São Bernardo, but this analysis confirmed that this work goes much further and escapes literary classifications. In it, a narrator-character aims to acquire the land of São Bernardo, but this plot is only a backdrop for the creation of a rich and dense narrative, which will take the reader on a journey into existential aspects of human nature. The novel São Bernardo is considered to be one of the most important of the 1930s generation and analyzes the power of rural landowners, a power that goes far beyond the limits of their land and into political and social issues. As a research problem, Graciliano Ramos’ São Bernardo constructs and reveals to us the figure of a narrator in the character Paulo Honório, whose verisimilitude is difficult to determine. The research is based on an interpretative and qualitative analysis of its bibliographic material, an interpretation that will seek to address the interweaving, in literary form, of social, political issues, personal relationships and existential conflicts, in the midst of which the difficulties and dilemmas surrounding narrative verisimilitude arise
