Resumo: This thesis concentrates into the research line of “Texts and discourse in the oral and written modalities”. It proposes to investigate, under the theoretical-methodological approach to rhetoric, the rhetorical evidences of ethos, pathos and logos in the parables of the gospel of Luke. The goal is to verify which one of these rhetorical proofs has more persuasive influence to the present audience of the gentile in the 1 st Century of the Christian era. With this objective, the study starts from the idea of parables in ancient times, for the classical Greek Aristotelian Rhetoric (2005) and in the Latin Quintilian Rhetoric (2015). Following these, evidence is presented to demonstrate the role of parables in the religious Hebrew culture in order to understand its usage in the New Testament, more precisely, in the Gospel of Luke. In order to show the development of the theoretical framework, brief analytical presentations of some exclusive parables of this gospel are made to exemplify each one of the rhetorical proofs. To amalgamate all the theory and show the hypothesis that in these discourses the pathetic proofs lead the audience into action, a rhetorical analysis of “The Prodigal Son” (Lk 15,11-32) and “The Good Samaritan” (Lk 10, 30-37) are presented. The analysis process confirms that the pathetic proofs have great impact in the audience and moves to action, once the emotions are what drives the audience into a passionate trajectory that makes to change the state of spirit and, consequently, the judgement. However, the pathos instance works together with the affection stablished through the ethos instance and the linguistic materiality (logos), which to reinforce the emotional aspects with narrative, figure of speech, argument and reasoning. Concluding, the discourse (logos) and the orator (ethos) base themselves on emotional aspects (pathos) to provide the audience the likelihood to take action. This study is based on the rhetorical works from the classical period: Aristotle (2005), Quintilian (2015), and Cicero (1976); As well as on the New Rhetoric authors: Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (1976), Perelman (1993), Meyer (1993, 1994, 2000, 2007). As well as the studies of Ferreira (2010, 2012, 2019), Tringali (2014) and Figueiredo (2018, 2020). To contextualize the parables, information from the theological area are used: Jeremias (1986), Bailey (1995), Dodd (2010) and Snodgrass (2010)

As well as the studies of Ferreira (2010, 2012, 2019), Tringali (2014) and Figueiredo (2018, 2020).
