Resumo: The objective of this research is to analyze the reception of Nostra Aetate in Brazil, in the actions of the Episcopal Pastoral Commission for Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue (CEEDI) of the CNBB, in a time frame of 57 years, in order to fill a gap in the research on the subject in Brazil. The Declaration Nostra Aetate (1965) brought a new paradigm, presented the fundamental principles for interreligious relations and demonstrated the openness of the Catholic Church to pluralism and interreligious dialogue. The problem is that there is a tension between the openness to dialogue and the Church's mission, which leads to the disproportionate treatment that the Catholic Church gives to the religions with which it proposes to dialogue, already present in the Declaration. With the Abrahamic religions there is a relationship of continuity with Nostra Aetate, of a spiritual bond, which promotes a deeper dialogic experience. But with the other religions, especially those of African origin and the religions of indigenous peoples, the look of lack, of incompleteness prevails, which is why they are objects of evangelization. The hypothesis presented in this paper is that the tension between openness and mission arises from the operationalization of the concept of interreligious dialogue in documents that theologically supported the Declaration, and linked dialogue to the mission of the Church, that is, the dialogue of salvation and dialogue as a method of inculturated evangelization, which were corroborated in the General Conferences of the Latin American Episcopate (1968-2007). The methodology used to understand the reception of Nostra Aetate by the Church in Brazil, - which aspects of the Declaration were able to enter into the actions of CEEDI, which were abandoned, what were the bases on which the action sought by the Commission was based, and what was its contribution for the dynamics of interreligious dialogue -, it was carried out from the analysis of documents prepared by the CNBB and CEEDI, from the Emergency Plan for Brazil (1962), to the Pastoral Plan of Joint (1966), and up to 1st to 22nd Biennial Plan of National Organizations (1971-2019), and reports, minutes, studies, seminars and correspondence. The research work focused on the analysis, description and comparison of these documents, which provided information on the activities, actions and positioning of bishops and advisors responsible for receiving Nostra Aetate and developing inter-religious dialogue in Brazil. In the discussion of the analysis, it was possible to identify that the Declaration was received in the shadow of other documents, that the fundamental principles of the Declaration were accepted by CEEDI, but actually appeared in relations with Afro-Brazilian religions after a long period, and in relation to peoples indigenous peoples, have not yet been consolidated. However, the willingness to open up and accept the principles of the Declaration, and the understanding of the concept of interreligious dialogue disconnected from the purpose of conversion, were already present among those responsible for interreligious dialogue at CEEDI. However, they were overshadowed by the Church's difficulty in breaking with old exclusivist paradigms, which created obstacles to the recognition of the positive value of religious pluralism and other religions, seen as a threat to the Church's hegemony, which was losing its faithful. Therefore, CEEDI made its contribution to the reception of Nostra Aetate and the development of interreligious dialogue, prioritizing not the theological aspects underlying the concept of dialogue, but applying the principles of the Declaration to the Brazilian reality. Promoting dialogue in the alterity of religions and people, in an effort to legitimize the right to difference. CEEDI inserted the dialogue in the context of social issues, in the struggles for self-determination and autonomy of religious minorities and marginalized groups, in respect for religious freedom, in an attitude of historical reparation. The tension between openness and mission remains as fidelity to the Church's mandate, especially in relation to Indigenous Peoples. With African-based religions, inter-religious relations have acquired deeper levels and conquered their space in CEEDI's actions
