Intolerância, redes sociais e mèreversão: faces da violência na contemporaneidade

In Brasil, violence is a recurrent subject in the news media, but what we witness today seems to differ from what used to happen in the past. Nowadays, violent outbursts occur for extremely dull reasons; acts that stem from extreme aggressiveness for which reasons are sometimes not even comprehensible. During the last presidential elections, we saw an example of how political marketing and the media can affect the electorate in such a way that the dispute between candidates became a war between regions. Issues such as migration and intolerance against the ‘nordestino’ were put on the agenda as something worthy of further debate. Furthermore, the political battle raised questions towards racial bias and class bias; an evidence that the strategy used was based on the population’s own conservatism and prejudice; it did not input in society new concepts and feelings. Through our object of analysis - the discourse of the Twitter users against the nordestinos (from the day Dilma Rousseff was elected, on October 31st , 2010, until the end of 2011)- our work intends to analyze how prejudice against the nordestino came along in Brazil, how it was used as a political strategy, the inequalities that have been essentialized as differences in the country and the way prejudices are formed and, in certain contexts, gain strength. This work also aimed to foster a better understanding of how political and media manipulation led the youth to so easily display aggressiveness and prejudice on a social networking website and on the online petition created by the Movimento São Paulo para os Paulistas. Therefore we can draw the conclusion that the violent acts that we witness nowadays point to serious changes in the social configuration. This work brings to light a society that has no references, that is drifting along, and it also shows how ideological and social purposes became the mere backdrop in which violent acts spring up in an uncontrolled way
