Resumo: Introduction: The research aimed to investigate the process of adoption and return of children and adolescents in Brazil. Despite it being illegal to return adopted children in the country, this phenomenon happens and most of the time it is because the child does not meet parental expectations. Many parents seek adoption to make up for an idealized child, creating fantasies about what that child should be like. When the imaginary encounters the real, disappointments, conflicts and suffering happen and, if adults do not know how to deal with the situation, they may end up returning the child. This causes trauma and behavioral regression in the abandoned child, who will have more difficulty trusting and forming bonds in future adoption attempts. It is extremely important that Psychology pays attention to adoption processes to avoid these drastic solutions, which break the bond and cause suffering for both parties. Objective: The research aimed to analyze the impact of returning children in the adoption process from the perspective of an adopted and returned person. Methodology: A case study was carried out based on the analysis of interviews with a person over 18 years old, who was returned in an adoption process. Results: Three themes were used for the analysis of the: (1) how the adoption and return process took place; (2) emotional bonds that were established and (3) how he currently seeks to overcome his traumatic experiences. His adoption process was not completed, the homes he passed through had only temporary custody and in most of the houses he did not feel part of the family. The feeling of frustration and distrust in adults were central to the narrative and mark characteristics of his psychological functioning today. During his life, 3 emotional bonds were relevant, (1) with the first person who took care of him until he was 9 years old with affection and love, providing the feeling of family and belonging; (2) his mother, who he always had a certain proximity, but in a disharmonious way, with difficulties and resentments, and (3) his father, who he always wanted to meet so that he could have more information about his background and identity. The search for overcoming traumatic situations is a highlight in his story as he always tries to forgive everyone for the past, and today, observing what he learned from the difficulties he went through, he wants to seek psychotherapy help to learn more about himself and elaborate sensations and remarkable experiences of his life. Conclusion: The research illustrated the diversity of the adoption process beyond what is stipulated by legislation

Conclusion: The research illustrated the diversity of the adoption process beyond what is stipulated by legislationIntrodução: A pesquisa se propôs a investigar o processo de adoção e devolução de crianças e adolescentes no Brasil.
