Resumo: This monograph presents topics related to the development and the transformations applied to the electric guitar, inside the XX century. The first section will introduce, through short biographies, the executing musicians of the guitar, since the acoustic phase to its consolidation as an electric musical instrument related to Rock and Roll and to Jazz. In the second section will be enumerated the main technical changes applied to the instrument by the manufacturers that worked for its electrification. The third section will deal with the description of the effect caused by the arrival of the electric guitar in Brazil, by means of the Rock and Roll. The fourth section will be dedicated to the consolidation of the guitar as electrical instrument, that take place in the 1960 years, especially due to the work of the musician Jimi Hendrix
