Resumo: The way people represent Diabetes Mellitus can influence living with the disease. The objective was to apprehend the social representations regarding Diabetes Mellitus and analyze the impacts of the disease on the lives of 11 elderly people treated at Clinical School of Physiotherapy. Three categories emerged: 1) Diabetes Mellitus: A bad disease; 2) Diabetes Mellitus: total change of life; 3) Diabetes Mellitus: Resilience. It is essential for health professionals to know the social representations of Diabetes Mellitus in order to develop health education actions and care for patients with this disease.

El objetivo era aprehender las representaciones sociales sobre la diabetes mellitus y analizar los impactos de la enfermedad en la vida de 11 personas mayores tratadas en la Clínica Escola de Fisioterapia. Surgieron tres categorías: 1) Diabetes mellitus: una enfermedad grave. 2) Diabetes Mellitus: cambio total de vida; 3) Diabetes mellitus: resiliencia. Es esencial que los profesionales de la salud conozcan las representaciones sociales de la diabetes mellitus para desarrollar acciones de educación sanitaria y atención a pacientes con esta enfermedad. A maneira como as pessoas representam o Diabetes Mellitus pode influenciar no viver com a doença. O objetivo foi apreender as representações sociais a respeito do Diabetes Mellitus e analisar os impactos da doença na vida de onze idosos atendidos na Clínica Escola de Fisioterapia.
