Resumo: | This study aimed to identify and analyze the social representations of the aging among the residents of a former colony hospital in northeast Brazil. There was a participation of 16 people, aged between 48 and 85 years (M = 67.0 years, SD = 9.7). For a data collection, we used a sociodemographic questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The interviews were analyzed by the Descending Hierarchical Classification method, resulting in 5 classes of semantic approximation. The results indicated that participants represent aging as a stage (old age). Moreover, this representation shows positive and negative elements. In a positive way, old age is quantitatively conceived as synonymous with a long life. Negatively, the interviewees associate this stage with physical and social losses, dependence and increased self-care, a situation that entails personal and social conflicts. |
