Summary: With rapid population growth, technological advances, and new family models, many families have resorted to the Long-Term Shelter for the Elderly (ILPI), in which the elderly are in a different configuration of the family, which can lead to psychological distress or some geriatric syndrome. This article aims to discuss, based on a bibliographical review, the important role of the Psychologist in improving the quality of life of the institutionalized elderly.

This article aims to discuss, based on a bibliographical review, the important role of the Psychologist in improving the quality of life of the institutionalized elderly. Con la rápida maduración de la población, los avances tecnológicos y los nuevos modelos familiares, muchas familias han recurrido a la Institución de atención a largo plazo para personas mayores (ILPI), en la cual, sin embargo, los residentes mayores se encuentran en una configuración diferente a la de la familia, que a menudo puede causarles angustia psicológica o algún síndrome geriátrico. Este artículo tiene como objetivo discutir, a partir de una revisión de la literatura, la importancia del desempeño del psicólogo para una mejor calidad de vida de los ancianos institucionalizados.  Com o célere amadurecimento populacional, os avanços tecnológicos e os novos modelos familiares, muitas famílias têm recorrido à Instituição de Longa Permanência para Idoso (ILPI), na qual, porém, os idosos residentes se veem em uma configuração diversa daquela do ambiente familiar, o que lhes pode acarretar, muitas vezes, sofrimento psíquico ou alguma síndrome geriátrica.
