Resumo: The increase in the elderly population consequently generates an increase in elderly people who drive, thus, there is a concern with the physical conditions of the elderly driver, given the possible risks in traffic. The present study aimed to identify gait speed (GS) and hand grip strength (HGS) in the elderly who underwent evaluation for vehicle clearance. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. 63 elderly people (≥60 years old) who took the exams for renewal of the National Driver's License, in a traffic clinic participated in the study. The elderly were aged between 60 and 85 years (mean 67.95 ± 6.23years) and most men 82.5% (n = 52). The results showed for GS mean values of 1.11 ± 0.26 m / (meters per second). For the elderly considered fit with restriction for vehicular habilitation, the average GS was 1.07 ± 0.29 m / s, for the fit 1.16 ± 0.21 m / s and for the unfit temporarily 1.26 m / s. For the HGS, the mean values for the right hand were 38.60 ± 4.55kgf and the left hand 36.24 ± 5.342kgf. For the elderly categorized as fit with restriction, the mean HGS of the right hand was 38.96 ± 4.6kgf and the left hand was 37.29 ± 4.6kgf, for the fit elderly this average for the right hand was 38.63 ± 4.3kgf and left hand 35.82 ± 5.5kgf. The hand grip strength and gait speed as health markers can be considered important indicators of the physical condition of the elderly driver as variables of screening and monitoring.
