The Effectiveness of Animal Assisted Therapy on Cognitive Performance of Institutionalized Elderly

Resumo: Currently, there is an increase in the prevalence of cognitive impairment in the elderly and, often, its institutionalization; but aging does not only mean loss; it may also be acquisitions, in which the investment made through Animal Assisted Therapy (TAA) can be exemplary, which has proven to be a very beneficial strategy to motivate relational work between the elderly and the animal, with beneficial effects for this elderly. Animal-Assisted Therapy (TAA) has proven to be a strategy that has contributed to improving this. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate its effectiveness in the cognitive development of the elderly, through an experimental study with thirteen elderly in a Long Term Care Institution of São Carlos, city of São Paulo State, Brazil. The data collected before and after the test show that TAA is an effective strategy for the elderly, as shown by the results obtained in this study.

The data collected before and after the test show that TAA is an effective strategy for the elderly, as shown by the results obtained in this study. Actualmente, hay un aumento en la prevalencia del deterioro cognitivo en los ancianos y, a menudo, su institucionalización; pero el envejecimiento no solo significa pérdida; también pueden ser adquisiciones, en las que la inversión realizada a través de la terapia asistida por animales (TAA) puede ser ejemplar, lo que ha demostrado ser una estrategia muy beneficiosa para motivar el trabajo relacional entre los ancianos y los animales, con efectos beneficiosos para estos ancianos.  Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar su efectividad en el desarrollo cognitivo de los ancianos, a través de un estudio experimental con trece ancianos en una institución de atención a largo plazo de São Carlos, ciudad del estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Los datos recopilados antes y después de la prueba muestran que TAA es una estrategia efectiva para los ancianos, como lo demuestran los resultados obtenidos en este estudio. Atualmente observa-se o aumento da prevalência de alterações cognitivas em idosos e, muitas vezes, sua institucionalização; mas envelhecer não significa apenas perdas; pode ser também aquisições, em que pode ser exemplar o investimento feito por meio da Terapia Assistida por Animais (TAA), que vem se mostrando uma estratégia muito benéfica no sentido de motivar um trabalho relacional entre idoso e animal, com efeitos benéficos a esse idoso. Dessa maneira, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficácia da TAA no desenvolvimento cognitivo dos idosos, por meio de um estudo experimental com treze residentes em uma Instituição de Longa Permanência de São Carlos, cidade do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil.
