Knowledge on risk factors of falls and sources of information used by elders of Londrina (PR)

Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the knowledge of the elderly in relation to risk factors related to falls and sources they used to search for such information. Method: A cross-sectional study in 120 elderly through interviews was done. Results: It was found that the elderly partially know the risk factors for falling down, mentioning irregular sidewalks and streets (41.6%), presence of disease (34%), but ignoring other important factors. In terms of sources of information, the most reported was one`s experience of life (85%) with little account of electronic, digital and printed media. Conclusions: in the face of this reality, it is suggested a higher increase of investment in programs guiding the risks of falling with informational materials, textbooks and illustrated including greater participation of the media and health professionals in order to clarify the elders and prevent falls that worries both families and health care managers.
