Resumo: Social inequality causes processes related to the aging of populations. From the perspective of social totality, here we discuss the Unified Health System (SUS) and the challenges posed to the social protection of elderly populations in Brazil, where 75.3% of the elderly depend exclusively on SUS. There are, therefore, challenges in offering assistance to that segment given the current scenario of deepening inequalities, economic crisis and attacks on democratic processes
