Resumo: The aim of the study was to analyze the meanings that the old women - participants in an EJA Program - attribute to education. Qualitative research was used, as well as bibliographic and field surveys, as well as observation and interview techniques. The perceptions were grouped into three categories: leisure/sociability, citizenship/belonging, freedom/autonomy. The meanings were varied, but all pointed out the need to expand educational spaces for women, especially in old age.

Se utilizó investigación cualitativa, así como investigación bibliográfica y de campo, además de técnicas de observación y entrevista. Las percepciones se reunieron en tres categorías: ocio/sociabilidad; ciudadanía/pertenencia; libertad/autonomía. Los significados eran variados, pero todos apuntaban a la necesidad de ampliar los espacios educativos para las mujeres, especialmente en la vejez. O objetivo do estudo foi analisar os significados que as mulheres velhas – participantes de um Programa de EJA – atribuem à educação. Lançou-se mão da pesquisa qualitativa, e das pesquisas de tipo bibliográfica e de campo, além das técnicas de observação e entrevista. As percepções foram reunidas em três categorias: lazer/sociabilidade; cidadania/pertença; liberdade/autonomia.
