Toxicity and discursive violence against women federal deputies on Twitter

Resumo: The paper discusses how social media platforms have acted to legitimize and spread rather than manipulate toxic discourses, particularly with regard to gender-based violence against women in Brazilian politics. Our research seeks to understand: (1) which discourses emerge targeting Brazilian federal deputies (with mandates between 2019 and 2022) and their possible effects; and (2) whether there is a difference between toxic speeches directed to women deputies on different sides of the political party spectrum. To this end, we have analyzed 500,000 tweets published in June 2022 that directly mentioned female deputies in their last term. Through a qualitative-quantitative analysis, we identified two large categories of toxic discourses: one related exclusively to the figure of women, i.e., gender-based violence, and the other relation to the political group of which those women are part, that is, party-political nature attacks.

Nuestra investigación busca comprender: (1) qué discursos emergen dirigidos a los diputados federales brasileños (con mandatos entre 2019 y 2022) y sus posibles efectos; y (2) si existen diferencias entre los discursos tóxicos dirigidos a diputadas de diferentes lados del espectro político-partidista. Para ello, analizamos 500 mil publicados en junio de 2022 que mencionaban directamente a diputadas en su último mandato. A través de un análisis cuali-cuantitativo, identificamos dos grandes categorías de discursos tóxicos: uno relacionado exclusivamente con la figura de la mujer, es decir, la violencia de género, y otro en relación con el grupo político del que forman parte, es decir, los ataques por parte de carácter político-partidario.   O artigo discute como as plataformas de mídia social contribuem para a legitimação e o espalhamento do que chamamos de discursos tóxicos, particularmente no que diz respeito à violência de gênero contra mulheres na política brasileira. Nossa pesquisa busca compreender: (1) quais discursos emergem tendo como alvo as deputadas federais brasileiras (com mandatos entre 2019 e 2022) e seus possíveis efeitos; e (2) se há diferenças entre discursos tóxicos dirigidos às deputadas nos diferentes lados do espectro político-partidário. Para isso, analisamos 500 mil tweets publicados em junho de 2022 que mencionavam diretamente as deputadas no exercício do último mandato.
