Resumo: The study investigates the theme of malaise and well-being in the academic trajectory of the doctorate. The university is one of the most important institutions in society, composed of diverse experiences and knowledge. In this institution, the states of malaise and well-being are also produced, which permeate and influence the formative trajectories, as well as the social relations of each subject. Thus, the objective of the research was to understand the perceptions of malaise and well-being of doctoral students at a community university in Rio Grande do Sul. For data collection, a qualitative approach methodology was used. Biographical narratives were collected through an online and free platform. The research subjects were eight doctoral students from the aforementioned community university in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. We chose to carry out the research in the context of postgraduate stricto sensu, at the doctoral level, as it is believed that this scenario plays a fundamental role in the development of scientific studies, in the most different areas of knowledge, as well as in the training of people capable of acting and transforming societies, through the production of knowledge and education. In addition, it is believed that pursuing a doctorate is a relevant phase of the personal and professional training of Brazilian researchers. From the investigation in this context, research data were collected and, subsequently, two thematic axes were elaborated to discuss the concept of malaise: (1) lives of doctoral students: academic work and productivity; (2) impacts of social isolation: suffering, boredom and remote work. To discuss the concept of well-being, the following thematic axis was formulated: contexts that promote knowledge and affection. Based on the analysis of the narratives, it was possible to understand the doctoral students' perceptions about malaise. For doctoral students, such a state occurs due to the multiple demands, the uncertainties of academic life, the delivery of the thesis project and the pressure for productivism. These aspects cause anxiety, worry, tiredness, psychological discomfort, physical and mental exhaustion, characteristics that were perceived as components of malaise. The context of the pandemic was also perceived as a factor of discomfort, as doctoral students feel bored, lack of socialization and difficulty, or even the impossibility of adapting to the study routine remotely. With regard to well-being, the aspects listed by students and that make up this state are as follows: the university is welcoming, teachers are affectionate and the relationship with mentors, in most cases, is one of trust and autonomy. Respondents also feel well-being when they establish emotional bonds with colleagues and are engaged and motivated with the learning process. In this sense, after the analyzes and reflections made in this research, the thesis that it is pertinent to investigate malaise and well-being in educational institutions is supported, because, from investigations like these, one can understand how the effects of neoliberal and productivist society have an impact on the academic, personal and professional lives of doctoral students, causing malaise. Even so, it is believed that the university is a context of well-being and strategies aimed at integral and human formation, these being possibilities for the subjective well-being to be lived and sustained in the lives of Brazilian doctoral students. Keywords: Human and Social Sciences; academic education; malaise; welfare; Covid-19.
