As múltiplas prisões femininas : um estudo sobre os textos e contextos midiáticos no ambiente prisional

The data from the National Penitentiary Department (Depen), publicized in 2012, depicting the reality of our prison system in the previous year (2011) shows that Brazil is among the four countries with the largest prison population in the world, group that includes also the United States, China and Russia. The prison population more than doubled in just over a decade. Our prisional population is 514,582. 480,523 are men and 34,058 women. It means that about 7% of the country's prison population is female. This paper aims to analyze the reality of women's prison and the prison context relationship with the media. We analyze these through an approach focused on Cultural Studies. In our research we dialogue with a group of prisoners who are serving sentence in Madre Pelletier Penitentiary Women, in Porto Alegre (RS). These conversations yielded Life Stories. We use, therefore, these Life stories to understand how media pervades the daily prison and how it is present in the formation of subjectivities of these prisoners. We believe that the women, when deprived of liberty, are victims of multiple imprisonments that form their identities. We understand that identities which are the base of our study - are processes and, therefore, are constantly changing. Therefore, we seek to understand, in a social and cultural context, what are these multiple arrests.
