Resumo: Brief history of the archival practices in order to demonstrate the need for recording and organizing archival information from an early age. It discusses how, throughout the 20th century, there has been a search to improve these practices, to develop systems of representation and finding aids, and terminology standardization, with emphasis on the role of the International Council of Archives, to consolidate archival knowledge and make it understandable, accessible and shared.
