Resumo: Presenting the debate on the institutionalization of Brazilian metropolitan regions, this article proposes to characterize the movement that started in 1933 until the enactment of LCF nº 14/73, using the bibliographic survey and consultation of documents, periodicals, and legislation as a method. The main topics addressed and the debate in the period were identified, which culminated in the Brazilian project of metropolitan regions. Keywords: metropolitan regions; metropolitan institutionalization; legislation; urban history.

Como resultado, identifica los principales temas abordados y el debate en el período, que culminó en el proyecto brasileño de regiones metropolitanas.
