Resumo: I propose to reflect on the articulation between ethnography and history based on research on the formation of “communities” in the Middle Rio Negro. I outline the path through which historicity has become more relevant to ethnographic reports and discuss the importance of the category of indigenous peasantry for understanding territorial dynamics in situations of ethnic conflict. Keywords: indigenous peoples; Amazon; anthropology; history; territoriality.
