Teacher training in the formation of the higher education system in the state of Bahia, Brazil

Resumo: The higher education system in the state of Bahia, Brazil, comprises four universities offering, altogether, several undergraduation and graduation courses, in a number of areas. The system configuration is around 20 years old, but the colleges which gave rise to it were structured back in the late sixties. The aim of this study is to highlight the teacher training role in the system formation. Also, it is presented a discussion on the possibilities and limitations originated from the teacher training colleges in the higher education democratization process. The conclusion is that, although the teacher training courses have been the driving force of the higher education system in Bahia for more than 40 years, the number of vacancies offered by the course is not sufficient to equate the historical problem regarding the lack of titled teachers in the state.

Sua atual configuração tem pouco mais de vinte anos, no entanto, as faculdades isoladas que lhe deram origem remontam ao final da década de 1960. O objetivo deste texto é destacar o papel desempenhado pela formação docente na gênese deste sistema. Discutem-se as possibilidades apresentadas pelas faculdades de formação de professores para a democratização do ensino superior bem como suas limitações.
