Resumo: This article discusses the educational practices in labor unions of the Court and the Province of Rio de Janeiro from the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. From the analysis of statutes and reports of societies for mutual assistance and charity was possible to see the active role of men and women workers in their own education. The knowledge derived from associative experience and the struggle of people classified as adverse for learning for its own education constitute the history of popular education and making of the working class in Rio de Janeiro.

A partir del análisis de los estatutos e informes de las sociedades de apoyo mutuo y beneficencia, fue posible constatar el papel activo de hombre y mujeres trabajadores en su propia educación. El conocimiento derivado de la experiencia asociativa y de la lucha por la escolarización llevada a cabo por sujetos considerados contrarios a la educación, o carentes de ella, constituyen la historia de la educación popular y de la formación de la clase obrera en Rio de Janeiro.Neste artigo, abordam-se indícios de práticas educacionais em associações de trabalhadores da Corte e Província do Rio de Janeiro entre a segunda metade do século XIX e o início do século XX. Analisando estatutos e relatórios de sociedades de auxílio mútuo e beneficência, foi possível constatar o papel ativo de homens e mulheres trabalhadores em sua própria educação.
