Resumo: This article examines the educational policy implemented duringthe presidencies of Mitre and Domingo F. Sarmiento. It alsoexplains the social orientation that these presidents tried to giveto education in each period as well as the limits of Sarmiento'sproposal. We conducted an analysis comparing the situation indifferent provinces, as well as the study of the reports submittedby the ministers who held office during both presidencies. Forthis approach a statistical analysis based on the budgetary andmaterial growth of the national education system during theperiod and a study of the unsolved needs. The aim is to show theimpulse given to education and its boundaries against the budgetcuts and the national productive orientation.

El objetivo es mostrar el impulso dado ala educación y sus límites frente al recorte presupuestario y laorientación productiva nacional.Este artigo examina a política educacional aplicada durante aspresidências de Bartolomé Mitre e Domingo F. Sarmiento. Alémdisso, explica a orientação social que tentou dar à educação emcada período, bem como os limites da proposta de Sarmiento.Conduzimos uma análise comparando a situação das diferentesprovíncias, bem como o estudo dos relatórios apresentados pelosministros que ocuparam o cargo durante as duas presidências.Para isso, abordamos uma análise estatística com base nocrescimento orçamental e no material do sistema educativonacional durante o período; e também um estudo dasnecessidades não resolvidas.
