“The berimbau gave me the compass”: capoeira and its manifestations in Sergipe, in the nineteenth century

Resumo: This text aims to understand aspects related to the manifestations of capoeira in Sergipe, in the second half of the 19th century. Being capoeira object of this investigation, it is understood as a cultural manifestation, including through its teachings, being an educational practice. We point out that it arose in a context marked by black slavery in Brazil. Considering this context, it is questioned to what extent the capoeira configurations, during the timeframe researched here, contributed to this manifestation regarding to the habitus formation of the subject called capoeira. Under the historiographic matrix of the New Cultural History newspapers, posture codes, reports of provincial presidents, paintings of recognized painters, travelers' reports, and official documents were analyzed. It was identified that, even though not included in official documents, capoeira marked the history of Sergipe thru its teachings.

Resaltamos que ella surgió en un contexto marcado por la esclavitud negra en Brasil. En este contexto, se cuestiona de qué manera las manifestaciones de la capoeira, en el período estudiado, contribuyeron para la formación del habitus de la capoeira. Bajo la matriz historiográfica de la Nueva Historia Cultural, se analizaron anuncios de periódico, códigos de postura, informes de los presidentes de Provincia, cuadros de pintores reconocidos, relatos de viajeros, documentos oficiales. Se identificó que, aunque no constando en los documentos oficiales, la capoeira marcó la historia de Sergipe a través de sus enseñanzas.Este texto tem como objetivo compreender aspectos relacionados com as manifestações da capoeira em Sergipe, na segunda metade do século XIX. Sendo a capoeira objeto desta investigação, aquela é entendida enquanto manifestação cultural, inclusive por meio de seus ensinamentos, constituindo-se como uma prática educativa. Ressaltamos que ela surgiu em um contexto marcado pela escravidão negra no Brasil. Diante desse contexto, questionamos de que maneira as manifestações da capoeira, no período estudado, contribuíram para a formação do habitus do capoeira. Sob a matriz historiográfica da Nova História Cultural, foram analisados anúncio de jornal, códigos de postura, relatórios dos presidentes de Província, quadros de pintores reconhecidos, relatos de viajantes, ofício.
