The use of the imperfect tense in European Portuguese and in European Spanish

Resumo: This work has as main objective to analyze the use of the Imperfect past tense in two Romancelanguages, European Portuguese and European Spanish, in order to verify if their uses, in certaincontexts, are equivalent or distinct. The analysis is based on data collected from two languagerepositories, one Portuguese (CETEMPublic) and one Spanish (CREA), as well as in Portugueseand Spanish online newspapers. The study focuses on conditional constructions in order to verifythe extent to which the two languages converge or not as to the use of the Imperfect in theseconstructions. After analyzing the data, it was observed that there are some differences betweenthe two languages in these constructions, based on the respective classes with which the Imperfecttense is combined.

A análise baseia-se em dadosrecolhidos em dois repositórios linguísticos, um português (CETEMPúblico) e outro espanhol(CREA), assim como em jornais online portugueses e espanhóis. O estudo centra-se emconstruções condicionais com o intuito de verificar até que ponto as duas línguas convergem ounão quanto ao uso do imperfeito nestas construções.
