Because of the supernatural elements of its plot, Le Diable amoureux has traditionally been interpreted by literary critics as a mere conte fantastique. What has not been considered so far, are the satírica!, didactic and moral intentions that can be found in the work. The incarnation ofthe devi!, Biondetta, in trying to seduce the hero, Alvare, into abandoning his moral and r_eligious commitment to tradition, uses the sarne strategy as the fictional character of the «philosophe» found in antiphilosophical literature of the 1760-1776. The diabolical Biondetta chooses as a victim a vulnerable young man attracted by promises of grandeur and power. The devilish Biondetta endows ali the attributes of the Enlightenment while the hero, Alvare, embodies the burden oftradition. ln doing so, Cazotte clearly places himself among those who questioned these values and embraces an antiphilosophical position.
