Resumo: The workforce of today is much more diverse than in the past, where women are now anessential part of the working population. They aspire high positions and equal compensation.Gender equality in the workplace is directly linked to improved firm performance in variousfields. Still, gender equality is not achieved in American companies. It is assumed that thereasons are tied to the top-level executives governing firms. Drawing from the upper echelonstheory, this paper examines whether the likelihood of a firm to take an action in favour ofgender equality can be explained by the personal values and beliefs of CEOs, which in turn aredriven by their age, gender, and political ideology. The dataset includes the CEOs of allcompanies listed in the S&P500 between the years of 2009 and 2016. Results show, that there isno statistical significance between CEO characteristics and advocacy for gender equality in theworkplace. Future research could be further directed towards the characteristics of individualsin TMT in general to gather more insights of how much gender equality is influenced by theindividual characteristics, beliefs and values of the individuals at the top.

Eles aspiram a posições altas e remuneraçãoigual.
