Using socioscientific issues as a strategy for the teaching of electrical energy

Resumo: This paper discusses the use of socio-scientific issues in technical education to promote the mobilization of conceptual, procedural and attitudinal contents within Science-Technology-Society-Environment education. A socio-scientific issue on “universal access to electricity” was applied, through a didactic sequence, to a course on Electro mechanics, at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology, Bahia, Brazil. Data was collected from questionnaires and field observation. Content analysis was used to analyse the data. Results indicated that this socio-scientific issue enabled discussions on: the right to access, forms of generation and distribution of energy, consumer needs and major environmental consequences related to the use of electricity. Moreover, the students were able to discuss concepts related to the regulation of electricity, to government programs and socio-economic impacts, as well as facts related to social and environmental impacts of electricity generator technologies. In addition to this, participating students also develop skills related to academic literature research and the organization of discourse and argumentation; practiced their skills on teamwork and respect for different opinions. Finally, they were able to reflect upon values and interests related to consumerism, as well as on the universalization process of electricity access and its impact in the lives of citizens from rural communities.

Una cuestión sociocientífica sobre “el acceso universal a la electricidad” se aplicó en una secuencia didáctica para el curso Electromecánica en el Instituto Federal de Educación, Ciencia y Tecnología, Bahia, Brasil. Los datos fueron recogidos a partir de cuestionarios y observación de campo. El análisis de datos se realizó mediante la técnica de análisis de contenido. Los resultados indicaron que la cuestión sociocientífica permitió la discusión sobre el derecho de acceso, las formas de generación y distribución, las necesidades del consumo y las principales consecuencias socioambientales relacionadas con el uso de la electricidad. Además, los estudiantes, en esta secuencia didáctica, fueron capaces de discutir los conceptos relacionados con la regulación de la electricidad, en relación con los programas de gobierno y los impactos socioeconómicos, y los hechos relacionados con los impactos sociales y ambientales de las tecnologías de generación de electricidad; desarrollar habilidades relacionadas con la investigación en la literatura y la organización del discurso y la argumentación; practicar las habilidades relacionadas con el trabajo en equipo y el respecto a las diferentes opiniones; reflexionar sobre los valores e intereses relacionados con el consumo y el proceso de universalización del acceso a la electricidad en la vida de los habitantes de las comunidades rurales.O presente trabalho aborda o uso de questões sociocientíficas no ensino técnico para promover a mobilização de conteúdos conceituais, procedimentais e atitudinais, no contexto da educação ciência-tecnologia-sociedade-ambiente. Uma questão sociocientífica sobre o tema “universalização do acesso à energia elétrica” foi aplicada em uma sequência didática para o curso de Eletromecânica do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia, Bahia, Brasil. Os dados foram coletados a partir de questionários e observação de campo. A análise de dados foi realizada por meio da técnica de análise de conteúdo. Os resultados indicaram que a questão sociocientífica permitiu a discussão sobre: direito de acesso, formas de geração e distribuição, necessidades de consumo e principais consequências socioambientais relacionadas ao uso da energia elétrica.
