Resumo: | The influence of the coach in the athletes' perceptions and well-being has been given particular attention in several modalities. Based on this idea, the main goal of this dissertation was to focus on the coach created motivational climate through the analysis of young Portuguese athlete's perceptions. Considering the scarcity of investigations covering these themes, the first step was to characterize the motivational climate experienced in a sample of trampoline gymnasts and verify what kind of strategies can be used to optimize the motivational climate. The results showed that gymnasts perceived a controlling and punitive environment, guided by pressure and fear. Gymnasts considered that the use of psychological skills training could benefit the management of controlling and punitive types of motivational climates. Considering these results, we performed a second study where we decided to verify if this finding would be repeated in other gymnastics disciplines and if the type of modality (individual vs collective) could be related to the type of climate perceived by the athletes. We compared the perceived coach created motivational climate by gymnasts (individual sport) and volleyball players (collective sport). The results corroborated the presence of a disempowering and ego-oriented motivational climate within the gymnasts, compared to volleyball players. Also, results showed the need to create methods to optimize gymnastics contexts. The insertion of methodologies that value the individual may imply an optimization of strategies for creating motivational climates by coaches, as well as an increase in athletes' perceptions of well-being. Finally, it seems important to suggest future longitudinal designs that allow us to follow this line of reasoning and compare with others individual sports, in order to understand the specificities of gymnastics and allow the creation of optimization strategies. |
