Resumo: The goal of this study was to identify the preferences of the Portuguese with 18 or more years, regarding the place of care at the end-of-life and to die. Also we wanted to identify the reasons for those preferences. We undertook a population-based telephone with 1228 individuals, selected by random stratified sample, by gender, age and country region. We found that the majority of individuals thought rarely or often about death. This is influenced by the gender, age, education, family situation and country region. About the place of care as well as the local of death the preferences, by descendent rating, are at home, at nursing home, hospital and, at the end, at palliative care services. The preference regarding the place of care is influenced by age, education and country region. On the other side, the preferences regarding the place of death is influenced by gender, age, education and country region. The reasons that were under the preferences are the possibility of to be near of the family and friends, not to be alone, to prevent the family burden, support of their health problems when they need and the idea that the local was the best at this phase of life.
