Resumo: In 2016, alcohol consumption was the seventh risk factor for premature mortality and disability worldwide, accounting for 2.8 million deaths in the same year. Alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing neoplasms, cardiovascular and neuropsychiatric diseases. The present literature review aims to summarize the main community intervention strategies to reduce and prevent alcohol consumption, according to the type of intervention. A review of the scientific literature indexed in PubMed, based on the MeSH terms search strategy was performed. The identified articles were evaluated for eligibility and data extraction was performed by two reviewers independently and in duplicate. Based on the articles analyzed, interventions in the Education and Behavioral Change category as well as Legislation, legal measures, taxation, and subsidies category demonstrated efficacy in reducing alcohol consumption, while interventions in the Complex Interventions category showed mixed results. Interventions from the Health System Intervention category, when carried out by the alcohol industry, appear to be ineffective in reducing alcohol consumption. An overall alcohol prevention and reduction strategy should integrate intervention types and contexts, prioritizing interventions with proven effectiveness.

An overall alcohol prevention and reduction strategy should integrate intervention types and contexts, prioritizing interventions with proven effectiveness.
